It might be Karma

I’m not spiritual person at all. Do I believe in God? Not really, often I joke that I won’t be going to hell, only going home. I allow the possibility of a higher being but don’t necessarily believe in that power, feel free to label me as you wish, I’ve never been fond of them. I was raised Protestant but gave up on that when I was about 9 or 10, I had too many questions and didn’t accept the bible’s answers. With that being said, the closest thing I’ve ever come to believing in something is Karma. And not because it’s a Buddhist thing, just that I always thought it makes a better society if people are simply nice to one another. So after travelling around the world I ended up in Vancouver and I couldn’t help to notice the rather large homeless population and subsequent problem. To help I started volunteering in a soup kitchen, simply because I figure that someone has to. In the year that I’ve been volunteering I’ve gotten a better job, and a better apartment. I was even given employee of the month and a prize for winning it. My love life has kicked into full swing and I’ve going on some fun dates and meeting cool people. Common sense tells me that this is only a coincidence; that Karma doesn’t exist and I’m doing better in life and my career because I’m making the changes. But I do have to wonder about it all, and I’m still volunteering in a soup kitchen.

Sorry, No Karma

Believing in karma is like believing that all the poor and others suffering in the world did something to deserve what's happening to them. Did all the population, including newborn babies and animals, deserve what's happening to them when there's a deadly tsunami or environmental disaster? The only sensible answer is a loud NO! On the other hand, there are many examples in history of murderers and other criminals who never got caught or got what they deserve. There is no such thing as good or bad karma. You should participate in causes because they're important to you, not because you believe in karma.

Your life is better because you don't believe in religion, this mens you get to make choices for YOUR life and you have no guilt. Imagine that, a world of happiness when you are just a good person doing good things. I love it! Keep up the good work fellow human.

You don't seem to understand how karma works...

"Believing in karma is like believing that all the poor and others suffering in the world did something to deserve what's happening to them"... "The only sensible answer is a loud NO!"

Actually the answer is YES, at least that's the idea behind the suffering of so many people on this planet. I'm not saying i believe in it or not, but i've studied/read/practiced plenty of Buddhist teachings - and that is the teaching. Those who perish do so as a way of paying for bad deeds either in this life or a past one. And those who do awful things in this life and don't get caught will pay in a next life.

You can not escape karma.

"Those who perish do so as a way of paying for bad deeds either in this life or a past one."

So you REALLY believe that anyone who suffers for whatever reason is guilty of some offence worth punishing this life or another?? I can't believe all the people who thumb you up. No, I don't believe in reincarnation or the afterlife or destiny or fate or whatever. It's one of the things you can't prove: how do you know you had another life if you can't even remember? And what constitutes bad deed? Nobody is perfect; we all make mistakes. You can always find something to put the blame on. It's sad that when a person suffers from some ill, the first thing that comes to your mind is "they deserve it" instead of thinking it might be just a random unfortunate event that nobody deserves. This type of victim blaming is cruel and doing a lot of absurd and unjustified harm solely because of your fictitious beliefs. It's comparable to witch hunting. I thought that society has evolved but it appears that science is still beyond the grasp of some people.

Thanks for the comments all!

To the two that seem to have hijacked my comments for a religious debate on Karma. Are you kidding me???!! This is the exact reason why I can't stand organized religion. This post was about my experiences and you have turned one small concept into an issue to be scrutinized over, piss off!

Your entire post, including the title, is about debating the existence of karma although you may not have realized. You can't stand organized religion yet you are pissed off when someone is making a case for science instead of religion or the supernatural? You clearly are closed to discussion and opinions other than your own. You can claim to be volunteering all you want but that angry, closed-minded attitude of yours doesn't look pretty.
