Nobody's fault but mine

57 years old with no hope in hell of retirement. I squandered away everything I earned on trips, good times etc when it should have been save, save, save...

Not to worry. At 60, you can apply for your CPP - oughta be around $500 per month plus. At age 65, you'll get CPP + OAS + GIS, and eight years from now that means you'll get around $2000 each month. Plus, you'll not have to pay the monthly premium for Medicare, you'll be eligible for $1500 every two years in dental, and the annual Compass card will set you back $45 per year, which will allow you travel throughout Metro Vancouver (and by 2022, probably into the Fraser Valley, as well). You work hard (even if you've spent it all), you pay your taxes and pay into CPP/OAS, and you get some of it back when you retire. All and all, if you make a point of finding housing (a co-op, for instance) where the housing charge is not too high, or you manage to get into seniors housing -- and there's quite a bit of that around, much of it very nice, where you pay on 30% of your "income" -- you'll not have much to worry about.

You have plenty of years to start saving

It's not too late. And I imagine you have a better paying job. My dad's 10 years your senior. And still working. Put in the effort mate. Maybe buy a couple of properties if you can, and rent them out for residual income.

Not to worry, a few years back there was a survey (a big national one, can't remember the source) in which a large percentage of Canadians were counting on winning the lottery as their primary plan for retirement. Now that's some seriously delusional thinking!
I'm on a road-less-traveled retirement plan which equates to saving nothing 'cause I ain't got a hope of making it to my golden years. If I do I am absolutely screwed, but I'm 95% sure my soul will be floating into the stars long before then. That, or I'll win the lottery!

Time to let er rip! Have a good time taking risks. Eat, drink and take drugs to your hearts content. With this strategy hopefully you go out doing something fun (riding a motorbike, having sex with a younger woman, etc.) or have a heart attack or something quick.

Thank you for this. Another reader that will be retiring in 10 years and I'm nervous also. I started to research all your information and I am breathing a little easier.
