Once upon a time

I believed in love, joy, compassion, care, kindness, justice. Life is made of running into people full of hate, anger, cruelty, indifference, evil, injustice. What went wrong?

There can be no light without darkness, so we have all kinds. Seek out the ones that bring you joy.

Perfection never survives contact with reality. I was once like what you describe, unworldly and naive. Life happened, and I came around to optimalism the very long way and out of necessity, and to retain what sanity I still had. It's gotten better since. I've found some magnificent people, and a bit of my joie de vivre has come back. Learned to forgive and let go, which is really much more selfish than an act of grace. I cut crazy amounts of slack for those who are kind, considerate, caring and courteous - easy to do , as they are not many.

Seek great company, especially those greater than you in some ways. You and your life will be the better for it.

You will see all the good things in life if you walk, it's the running around part that messes people up.

Behind cruelty

I do not agree with people treating each other badly or staying the line of fire. However, I do believe that people may be suffering in ways we do not know. The way they deal with the world may reflect that. What if the angry person was being abused daily. Responding with kindness may surprise you. Giving them some slack as they are dealing with problems will make you feel better.

Nothing went wrong, it sounds to me like you have finally woke up and are now aware of the surrounding chaotic shitstorm known as life in the real world. Your best bet is to understand and accept it and learn to use it to your advantage.

The key is not allowing the negative forces to alter your natural state of being. I discovered long ago that assholes rule the world, and every group (religion, government, ideology, movement) has a bunch of assholes at the top ruining it for all the good people below. Always telling us to hate these people or those people, or accusing others of hating us so we should hate them too. In your own life just cherish those who show themselves to be good-natured and caring. You only need 2 or 3 of these people as close friends in order to survive the negativity onslaught brought on by the takers in this world - learn from these wicked and selfish ones and you soon be able to spot them quick and never allow their fangs to attach to your soul and suck it dry of all the love, joy, compassion, care, kindness and justice YOU STILL care about.
My life has been a fucking shit show and I could have easily allowed the darkness to swallow me whole many years ago but I just find too much joy in making people smile & laugh, so that's what I've continued to do despite my personal struggles and despite being witness daily to the horror brought on by the horrible human beings roaming the earth. Just accept that the sucky ones suck real bad but always seek out the light and those who glow with it.

Abuse doesn't justify abuse

Behind cruelty, I treated angry people with kindness, even love. They thought of my kindness as something to take advantage of and harmed me for being compassionate.
The Goodguy is right, there are assholes on top, and even worse assholes who serve their own interests while serving those assholes on top and even those who are on the bottom learn how to be evil. Hold on, there is good in the world. It's not hundred percent bad. The saddest thing though, as much as I want to believe there are still good people out there, I find out that they too, even if didn't completely succumb to evil, but are too busy, afraid, whatever to stand up against it. So what does that make them? If you are a good person but you don't stand up for good and against bad, can you still claim you are the good guy?
