Selfies

I really don't get the obsession so many girls have with taking selfies. I mean, if someone posts one occasionally, that's fair enough, but there are so many girls I see on Facebook or Instagram where like 98% of their photos consist of selfies. Not only is this pretty much displaying to the world how narcissistic you are, but am I the only one who just can't stop imagining how ridiculous these girls must look trying to take them? I imagine them locked away in their room alone, pouting or giving their best wannabe model look into an electronic device for 2 hours just to get that "perfect" shot. Then they post it with some caption implying that they happened to snap that photo on a whim when you know it's completely contrived and they spent hours achieving it. I'd be pretty embarrassed if I posted photos like that. But maybe that's just me?

It is totally without a doubt the most unnatural type of picture to take. I noticed on my facebook that the same people take the same looking selfie everyday, sometimes multiple times a day, and post them up at specific times. It has become a routine for them, wake up then post practically the same selfie as yesterday and just sit back and wait for the "likes" to roll in. Those same "likes" that everyone pretends to not care about even though they absolutely care about getting them more than anything. If people were just honest about it then I wouldn't care but the constant reassurance that they're natural and spur of the moment only reassures the narcissism or self doubt of the person posting them who most definitely requires the attention to be happy. Lets also not forget the attempts to hang jewelry in the frame or show off tattoos while still trying to look natural. Get a hobby or something, come on!

I don't get...

the obsession some people have with what others are doing with their lives, especially what they do on Facebook. Not only is this displaying just how insecure and pathetic they are, I imagine them stalking acquaintances and random strangers for hours trying to find something negative to say to make them feel better about themselves. They also need to seek validation from Internet strangers that their judgmental attitude is justifiable by posting on Confessions.

Its my pathetic generation in general. So many millennials do these stupid selfies along with constant status updates on facebook and twitter and hashtag their photos and comments and all of this pathetic bullshit because they want to feel as though their meaningless pointless lives have some sort of validity. It comes from our upbringings where "everyone is a winner", where no matter what we did we were always told we were special and amazing, where the worst would still get a trophy, and now we are adults and are attempting to live in the real world where shit doesnt roll that way and life is not fair.

So we got facebook, instagram, twitter, vine, youtube, all that shit which allows us to pretend that we are still "special" and the mindnumbingly dull daily events known as "life" can be reported on and documented with a selfie (I hate that goddamn word) in work clothes with the caption "I am off 2 work lol" to posting a photo of a cup of coffee or sandwich on instagram. It all simply translates to "look at me please and acknowledge my existence". It is truly pathetic.

Facebook and selfies are here to stay. So let's not care about it anymore.

another way to look at it

Coming from a woman who is marginalized in our society and our media in terms of beauty/desirable physical appearance there is another way to look at the selfie. Sure, on the surface it might just look like a bunch of self obsessed narcissists - but underneath there might be a girl who never felt pretty enough to be in front of a camera, and maybe she's finally gained enough self esteem to declare "I am beautiful" to herself & to the world and so she does it through a selfie. Of course, it's pretty easy to tell the difference once you look at a bunch of the person's selfies - if they're all in the same spot with the same face and perfect hair/makeup or if they're standing in such a way that makes their body look more proportionate, etc etc if its super clear that they are only posting photos of themselves in a particular light then yes perhaps it is someone with either very little self esteem who is trying to gain it from getting likes and attention, or perhaps it's a narcissistic individual, but I'm willing to bet that rather a lot of them are just people who finally started to like themselves and decided to share that.

It's totally bizarre!
I remember doing a pretty sweaty hike and up at the top a girl had a selfie stick and was making pouty faces while scrunching up her hair trying to look sexy -- all the while everyone else was admiring the amazing view. Weird.

Yeah it's weird mind frame to be in. I was like that a few years ago.. I was one of the people who would post "woke up like this" selfie shot. Beyonce's song somehow gave it more of a reason to, but it was before that. I literally had no excuse doing it other than pure... I don't know what to call it.

It sure is narscistic behavior but I am not sure I was, or these selfiers are narscists. I am assuming 90% of the selfie addicts are doing this to feed their low self esteem. Likes are the validation they crave, and they post so they can get more. Another thing that makes me cringe is the food shot. You seat at the restaurant, and they snap the pictures. I get it. But still makes me cringe.

I grew up and realized none of this matter. Who cares? I haven't touched social media in three years now. I am clean haha.

Great post MSH!
Here's my take...
Who started the selfie craze? Celebrities
Who worships celebrities the most? Teenagers & young adults - especially girls.
They're just mimicking the behaviors of pop culture icons. They dress the part, they act the part, and look the part. Selfies and tattoos y'all!! It's fucking on!!
Modesty is long dead and showing off is what it's all about. Present the image and feed the ego, repeat, repeat... simple as that.
I had a good laugh on Halloween as a girl in the unit across from me stood on her deck for a 1/2 hour trying to get the perfect selfie in her fancy costume. I understand, shit's gotta be perfect. :) It doesn't bother me anymore, I totally understand that most people crave attention. The way to get attention has been made very, very easy with all this technology.
I took a few selfies (with a digi-camera) for my FB profile back in '06 and even then I felt like a goof doing so. But hey, the less photos of me the better. Me and the lens ain't on good terms it seems.
