Master of none

I am pretty decent at a handful of things, but I've never had the drive to become an expert in any single area. While I think there are positive aspects to being a generalist, I've come to a point in life where my lack of subject mastery brings me sadness. My confidence is suffering for my lack of skill. I wish I was one of those people who knew what they wanted to be early in life and achieved their goals with passion and focus.

maybe start with a small subject area. Like master-at-tying-shoe-knots, or master-of-recapping-the-sriracha-bottle-cap-without-that-drip-collecting-at-the-end-that-dries-out-and-becomes-all-nasty.

With respect, you come across as silly. I'm one of those fanatics who are incredibly great at one single thing, and pretty useless at everything else.

The reason I am like that, is because I have a deep rooted mania inside me to be better than everyone else at the one thing I choose to do. When I was 15(I'm a musician) I wasn't very good, which meant I was pretty well worthless in every way imaginable.

You on the other hand, have a wide range of general skills. I personally envy people like you, who are capable on so many levels, while I, outside of my narrow universe am not.

I think it just boils down to personal choices.

Here is what I would do....If you find something that fascinates you, keep learning about it and learning about it. Set goals with it and events with it that you have to accomplish something. If you get bored of it, put it down but make sure you look for another angle on the same subject that interests you and then get back into it. For example, when I wanted to play music I picked up the guitar. It was more of a fascination than a "passion". I hate the word "passion" and it's way overused. I would only play it for fun and practiced the technique just enough to have fun. Then I set the goal of going to an open mic and told all of my friends. 12 years later it is my career but even if it wasn't I would still play. There have been times I've become bored with one aspect of music and then I found another instrument or genre that interests me. When became bored of playing I tried teaching. If I get bored of teaching then I'll try another aspect of it. I think a pastime, hobby or profession can become boring if you only do the same thing with it the whole time. I really don't think passion is enough. You have to be curious and puzzled by something to keep your brain/heart interested. I find that the feeling of passion is emotional and mood based. Best of luck to you! I hope you find something that fascinates you enough to hold your interest!
