Wrote off my parents

I grew up in a very emotionally abusive family where love and affection from our parents was conditional on whether they approved of what we did or whether we were successful or not. If we did great, we were rewarded. If we had a bad game or a bad day, we were yelled and screamed at or given the silent treatment. A few weeks ago, I competed in a sporting event with the hope of qualifying for Worlds. I ended up having a bad day in competition and did not qualify. My parents were there to take credit for my success if it came...but since I failed, they booked it out of there without a single word to me. It has been 3 weeks since that day and I have yet to hear from them. This had been building for a long time, and finally it was the straw that broke the camels back....I made the tough decision and severed ties...After 38 years I am done with their BS, Done with their negative manipulative bullshit. They have power over me no more.

Life is too short for manipulative people - even if those people are your parents.

Such a shame to be a spoiled one at your age. I feel sorry for your parents.

Success can be defined in many ways. Sounds like freedom and independence is something you value. You can do it!! Do not be ungrateful for opportunities that your parents may have been provided. It is very difficult to do things on your own. Trust me I have taken care of myself since I was 14.
