Bad Person

I am a professional earning good money but not as much I like and certainly less than other conniving office politicians not deserving in order to advance. I should not be racing myself to the bottom I know. I did not get this is Welcome to Reality memo after college. I just left restaurant without leaving tip to a hard working middle aged immigrant lady who certainly has family to support. Maybe I will go to hell someday or I need to make up once I feel more financially secure.

Basically you need to tip and if you can't afford to tip then you can't afford to eat out.

If you don't want to tip, make your own damn food.

I'm on disability. My income is barely enough to survive. And yet, I still tip, because I am not an asshole.

Servers are paid minimum wage because they generally receive 15-20% invoice value (on top of taxes which is ridiculous).

Notwithstanding, a huge portion of non - service employees also receive minimum wage and receive no gratuity whatsoever. If you ask why service industry employees receive gratuities, the answer is inevitably because they're only paid minimum wage. By that logic, we should tip anyone who makes minimum wage. So why aren't you tipping your local warehouse worker who picks orders for goods shipped to your local retailer. Just be pro-active and send a cheque to the manufacturer of a product you regularly purchase.
Why are service/restaurant/hotel etc employees the only sector who receive this privilege?

If I receive bad service, I tip accordingly or not at all. Period. Personally, I 'd rather have service industry employers pay their employees a decent living wage, rather than pawning that responsibility off to we patrons. At least I'll be viewed as a human being.. Not a dollar sign.

The whole concept of tipping was to reward someone who did an exceptional job. It wasn't intended to be a wage supplement or an expectation. Unfortunately what we now have is so beyond ridiculous ! Seriously, half of the people now expecting a tip do absolutely nothing whatsoever to deserve it.
I went through a drive through yesterday and saw a little drawer opening in the wall with "donations" above it. Are you f'ing kidding me? The person stands at a speaker and a window taking orders and making change, and the next window spits out my measly food order, and now I'm supposed to lay them more money because what? They showed up for work? They were polite and friendly? Isn't that part of their job description? Before all the haters descend upon me like rabid dogs allow me to say this: I worked in several restaurants and since I was behind the scenes (by choice) I never got a tip and worked for minimum wage the entire time. I worked in a few retail places also and was not only not tipped but I was also subjected to every bit as much (or more) abuse than any server. I was also a gas jockey back when there was no such thing as self-serve and we we extorted to clean the window and check the oil as a matter of employment, not as a special favour. I've had kids who worked in restaurants too, as servers. I still don't get why suddenly I'm expected to pay an extra 20% (used to be 10% but apparently that was deemed not enough so the demand is now for 2x that much) just to get the same service that the person is hired to do because suddenly I've become the employer! I completely agree with the commenter who compared this bizarre requirement to anyone else who also works for low wages. There are scores of them!! Why only restaurant workers? Why not everyone else who works with the public and takes crap on a daily basis but still only gets minimum wage?? Until someone can truly give me a reasonable justification for this nonsense I'm keeping my money to myself and that's all there is to it.
