I left a cult.

I graduated university about 4 years ago. I was very idealistic and left-wing during this time. I hated Harper. I went back to university to watch a lecture on politics at SFU. At the opening of the lecture, professors announced their hatred for Stephen Harper--yep, still- and announced that they do not recognize Vancouver as Canadian territory. They then went on to do their lecture. I kind of feel like I left a cult. I was raised Catholic, and this kind of rhetoric on idealistic young minds reminded me of praying before mass or reciting prayers as if one were indoctrinated in a church. Straight up, there are some religions and the left that scare me as much as the right. I miss the center of politics.

I have the same experience after leaving religion. Political parties are like cults. All groups are like cults. I tried Yoga; couldn't get pass the recitations and rituals. Felt like I was being indoctrinated. I just want to get in shape, not join a cult!

At least we could debate the issues under Harper...been to CBC lately? It's like they became the propaganda arm of the Trudeau Govt...Nothing can be commented on.

I could have written this confession

I graduated from SFU with a minor in Political Science. I had to listen to left-wing professors whine about President Bush in EVERY class. I wrote a solid term paper that was evidently too sympathetic to the Bush administration, so I was given a mediocre grade. I tried to confront the professor about it, but he brushed me off.

I got into SFU's teacher education program and assumed that meant that I would, you know, learn how to teach. I ended up paying $3000 to be indoctrinated with the faculty's leftist beliefs. We were told that our "Western, Anglo dominated" culture was a problem, and then we spent chunks of time being forced to discuss injustice toward First Nations people and how we all are complicit in it.

Oh yeah, they also started all of their talks with, "I want to declare that we are conducting this lecture on the un-ceded territory of the (insert First Nations Band) people." etc.

As you described, It had a cult-like atmosphere, and because I march to the beat of my own drum, I was soon sent packing. The funny thing is, I'm a left-wing person like you. But you are correct. There are people on the left who are as obnoxious and problematic as the right.

Little do you know

Your ways of ignoring the world problems (including Harper) are rituals too.
