Life Is Unfair

There was a job posting at work and they hired someone who is very inexperienced for a senior manager position. They said the job required the applicant to be a Professional Engineer. This really stings because after high school I could have gone to UBC and become an Engineer very easily. Its just book learning after all. You learn the real stuff in the real world. I have been with the company for over 35 years and have worked my way from the bottom. I have paid my dues. This company owes this job to me because of my loyalty alone. The thing I hate the most is they didn't even interview me. Now I am taking orders from someone who could be my son. He never shuts up about metrics and accountability. We were going to hire 3 new guys but he said we can't because it doesn't make sense from a cost benefit perspective. We used to hire new guys all the time and it never was a problem. He may know the numbers and how to make money but I know all the people here and how this place works. Life is unfair and since when did people stop caring about loyalty.

Don't take it personally-most of the time when these positions are posted, they already know who they are going to hire right from the get go. I suggest finding a new job if you feel you are being treated unfairly.

and this is why my parents told me to stay in school and work hard and get my uni degree. Because it will benefit me later in life. Learn the wisdom and pass it on to your kids.

I can sympathize

I can understand how this is a slap in the face. I think the people who are downvoting this post are probably in the same position as the brat who got the job instead of you. They also want to get plum jobs straight out of college and leap over guys like you who have busted their ass at a company for years.

I also worked hard at a company for years and tried to get promoted to a clerical position. Do I have experience? No. But neither did the person they hired! I have more education and time at the company, but they chose to train the other person and be patient as she learned the job.

I suppose its worse for you because you have to take orders from this clown who has no real world experience. He regurgitates crap he learned from a textbook and now your workplace might suffer for it. Reminds me of that episode of "King of the Hill" when Hank's boss has a heart attack and puts a college kid in charge instead of Hank during a snowstorm... Anyways, I'm sorry you didn't get the job buddy.

It's not the 1950's

There is no such thing as loyalty between employer and employee. It's mutual exploitation, each side gets what ever they can from the other with giving as little back in return. There is no loyalty and no obligation. It's been this way since before I entered the working world which was in 1996 at the age of 16.

I started working in the late 90s, at the age of 13, and my employer was more than willing to take me on, then when I graduated highschool, take me on full-time in a good paying career. My family wanted me to go to Uni, so I did, what a waste of time.

It's all about people---there are loyal people, often times they are native Canadians with religious backgrounds whose sole motivation is not $$$$.

not good enough

never do anything for the sole purpose of loyalty. do it for the love, wisdom, connection, internal value, but doing something for loyalty alone? although this new person sounds like a tool.

"We used to hire new guys all the time and it never was a problem." Newsflash: companies will do anything nowadays to NOT hire people. They prefer to overwork the people they have.

And for anybody else who's mad about being leapfrogged by somebody younger and more inexperienced: they got hired because they cost less than you do. If you've been with the company a long time, they probably don't want to pay your price for your skills.
