When I'm near a dude who smells overly like detergent and fabric softener, I assume that he isn't doing his own laundry.

High-efficiency often means low effectiveness.
Even with the extra rinse cycle, the detergent may not rinse out completely. At times, I've had to rewash a load (sans detergent) to clear the stuff, even the scent-free one typical for me.
Depends on the load, and thinner clothing is often at least as problematic. Technology fabric can be particularly unpredictable in my experience.
Old-style, top-loading washers rarely had this problem. Newer is not always better. And I do laundry better than any of the women I know - their opinion, not mine.
