Binge eater

I'm addicted to binge eating. It stops me from enjoying life and being happy. I spend the weekends in front of the tv stuffing my face and then the weekdays starving and working out to burn it all off. Luckily I love exercising so I've kept an athletic looking build. It's such a shitty and completely unproductive pattern though. Makes me feel terrible and I end up avoiding going out/doing fun things on the weekend. Any ideas on how to get out of the cycle?

don't buy crap/one cheat day

One cheat day a week won't hurt you.
The rest of the week, don't starve yourself! Eat healthy, but eat a lot of the healthy. Like, you're not going to gain an ounce on quinoa, carrots, hummus and fresh fruit. You might as well have a full stomach!

go hiking. you can pretty much stuff your face as much as you want if you spend your weekend climbing up and down a mountain. also, hikes can be really beautiful around Vancouver.

Penn Jillette says he lost weight by binge eating blueberries (with a touch of cayenne) and other low-calorie foods.

i think not caring about what ur eating, not caring about weight, not caring about the excercise, is helpful. to focus more on good hang outs and not worry about the rest of it, you may gain some pounds at first, but this cycle is all consuming and complete waste of time in the long run. exercise because it feels ood and in a way you can keep it up long term, but cut it down, do something fun on the weekend. don't deny cravings. there isn't a fat person inside of you, just an anxious one who needs more realistic habbits. weight changes a few pounds all the time.

try spreading out the goodies throughout the week. prob easier on your system too and not as likely to give you as much guilt. a reward for making it through another day!

Emotional Eating

I would recommend reading some Geneen Roth books, she talks a lot about how your relationship to food is often a warning sign that you need to look at other aspects of your life that are not working. Working on the parts of your life that need your attention can alleviate the overeating, as it's often a coping mechanism for other stressors.

Also, I found tracking binge free days on a calendar to be very helpful. Try to even go 5-6 days without bingeing. Also watching the crossed out days grow, and seeing longer and longer chains of binge free days fueled me to keep going. Hated to break that chain!

“Emotional eating triggers are usually based on a need to soothe emotional pain. Perhaps, then, the next time we see someone overweight, or don’t like what we see in the mirror, instead of saying, “There’s a person who eats too much,” we might say, “There’s a person who’s hurting too much.”
