Sucks when you understand that everyone has always loved the person you pretended to be rather than the person you truly are

But we are ALL pretending...

Every single one of us - we have all made up personas that we put on before we leave our houses...or when we have people over. I look at people every time I'm out and about, at their 'costumes' and wonder about how good they are at acting

There is no "real you" at least not in the singular sense. For proof, fill out one of those stupid four-factor personality tests when you are in a great mood and then compare it to what happens when you write one while you are having stomach flu after eating Szechuan food. I guarantee you that they will seem like totally different people.

We are all a multitude. This notion of a real authentic self is quite laudable as a sentimental dream, but it is just that. You are not the same person at gunpoint as you are in your slippers at home. Or, rather, both of you are the same person.

We owe it to ourselves and to the people who are forced to share the planet with us to constantly try to improve. So our multitude, itself, changes.

And then it dies, so, there's that.
