36 years old and can't make it

So, I'm a single 36 year old professional working in mental health. Can barely afford to live on what I'm paid. I saw a nice job in Halifax. I'm going to apply. As much as I want to make things work here and I'm not sure how I'd thrive in Halifax. It's at least affordable.

Sorry to lose you

We need you and everyone who provides essential services to this city. I've been hearing about a lot of people in their 30's and 40's still early in their professions having to leave Vancouver

This is a crisis and we need solutions now which means some very honest and uncomfortable conversations.

because if you are, then you're still making more than those of us working full-time on minimum wage who make it work by doing shared accommodation and not putting ourselves in debit for non-essentials (like cars).

Really…Life is hard sometimes! I used to own a successful business but everything came crashing down when I turned 40. The good news…you are able to rebuild! May you have the focused energy to help you through this. I am also a professional that is finding it hard to make ends meet. Whatever you decide to do…stay or adventure onwards…may it be well for you.

What have you got to lose?

I left Vancouver for work and it was one of the best things to happen to me - I enjoy a standard of living and quality of life that I forgot was possible. I thought I would miss Vancouver a lot more than I do. There's probably a lot more on offer in Halifax than in Vancouver - travel, culture, friendly people.
If I had stayed in Vancouver all I would be doing is maintaining my debt load and feeling lonely.
I say go, at least try it somewhere else. The overpriced crappy rentals and adolescent cultural scene will still be here if you want to come back.

Try BC

You can also find adventure and new opportunities within BC. Look at postings for Interior Health or Northern Health, or all the various regions. It always pisses me off that people up and leave the province all together simply because they can't make it work in Vancouver. It's as if the rest of the province doesn't matter. Well really, it's because while living in Vancouver everywhere seems far- even 2hrs to Hope or 4 hrs to Kamloops seems far, when really it is not. People only leapfrog to other Canadian cities because they're too scared, unimaginative, or unadventurous to explore the different cultures and opportunities in their own backyard. If you love Vancouver so much, have the courage to stay close by so that you don't have to go fussing about setting up a new life in a new province, health system, etc. I mean, nothing against going to another city... if it calls you, it calls you and I'm sure you'll find some fantastic people and adventures. Those houses and towns/cities in Nova Scotia are beautiful and full of history & character. It's just sad that the rest of BC has so little appeal to people who have lived for years in a Vancouver bubble. As soon as you get to Hope, there is Hope--- try exploring BC before you up and leave.
