Bible Thumper

My sister is a stay at home mum living in the southern United States. The house she bought with her husband is far outside the major city. In fact, the end of her street is literally tumbleweeds and cacti. The reason I'm mentioning these details is because I think she has become extremely bored. She has decided she is taking the word of Jesus into her heart and has started going to bible study twice a week. Every time she calls me I can't get her off the topic of God and Jesus. We grew up basically athiest so this is all very strange for our family. It seems she saves her long winded bible thumping for me in particular and it makes me want to reach through the phone and punch her out! She sounds like she's lost her mind and I feel like I'm losing my sister. She's turning into someone I don't like; the type of person I'd never be friends with. We've always had our differences but this is too much for me. It's not that I'm closed minded or don't think people should be free to think and believe what they want but I don't want to talk about it and I've told her that. She doesn't listen and has to bring it up every time we talk. I've started avoiding her phone calls or rush her off the phone if I do answer. I want to support her but I just can't support the religious ranting. I'm sorry but I'll never believe Jesus is the son of god and came to save humanity and cured the ill and injured just by touching them. It's all so ridiculous. I hope she finds some friends when she goes back to work and realizes that she sounds like a nut job.

For most people God is an OK subject, but mention Jesus and the discomfort begins...You basically have 2 options: ignore the issue completely, or try to disprove her beliefs. It's obvious that the ignoring option is not working for you these days, hence the long confession :) .Debates are great tools to formulate your arguments:

You are definitely close minded. Perhaps you could try practicing some of the characteristics Christians and most open minded people use. I'm referring to empathy, forgiveness and LOVE.

Her colleagues will be god botherers too

I'm suspecting your sister will find plenty of like-minded individuals should she return to the work force.

She seems to have been influenced by her community and by the description of where she lives, the workforce will be plagued with god botherers too.

Jesus doesn't judge; you do. That's why this poor woman turned to an invisible man in the sky, because her own family isn't there for her. Such a tragedy.

Yeah, I have run across many like your sister. There is that saying: Live and Let Live. Truly when people are 'born again' they want to simply share their joy and have you experience it. However, it can interfere with your own beliefs and they must learn to leave it alone - best try to live by example. Honestly. When the Pope and the Dali Lama get together, do they have a conversionfest? Your sister sounds like she's being influenced by someone and the isolation isn't helping at all or she is experiencing an undiagnosed health event or maybe this is just what she needs in her life. Who really knows her personal trials and tribulations? I wish you and your sister the best.

Hmmm..... Funny you criticize her for thinking that her viewpoint should be adopted by you, yet you think your viewpoint should be adopted by her. What makes you so sure your viewpoint is the correct one? Just wondering....
