I feel bad for the faithful, good priest with a dwindling congregation, even if I'm a committed athiest.

So even if you have every reason to believe in God, and perhaps subconsciously do , you have committed yourself in denying Him? The Bible would call that the unforgivable sin of Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Only a fool would commit themselves to an eternal existence without God. That would be the definition of Hell.
Of course you do!

Because one doesn't need to be some dogmatic religious person to feel compassion or empathy.
Also spiritual and religious are NOT the same thing dammit!

Lots of congregations are growing---the ones that are dwindling are all of the "lefty progressive" congregations. Religious people do not tend to have liberal values---almost everyone I know at my lefty progressive church was raised religious, is addicted to the 'sense of community,' but doesn't like all of that God business, except as a platitudinous all-loving father figure who sets no standards for his children. Any talk of standards, be it about marriage, conduct, sexuality, etc. and that makes them upset.
People who go to church want to be challenged with standards---whether they live up to them or not is another matter, but the dwindling congregations are those that are on a left-wing moral high-horse. Rather than preaching the Gospel as it is plainly written, they teach a ridiculous pastiche of marxism and pacifism.
As an atheist, you should recognize Church for what it is: a sort of Opera/Theater. If a show doesn't get tickets, do you feel bad for the lead actor, or do you think he must not be very good at acting?
