Get off the sidewalk with you bicycle, PLEASE!

The worst part about the warmer weather, it brings out all the ding-bats who don't know the rules of the road when it comes to bikes. You're not suppose to ride on the sidewalks. This includes you, Mom and Dad with your two kids, (4 bikes all together) w/o helmets, riding down Willingdon near Kingway on the sidewalk, without a care in the world. And when I told them, "Get off the sidewalk with your bicycles", a blank stare only solidified their ignorance of the law and the fact they were teaching their children how to break the law too. And to the meek and timid passer-byers who look AT ME as if it's all my fault: get a backbone and gaze your eyes upon the real culprits here! People who ride bikes on sidewalks give all bike riders a bad name. The next biker I see coming at me on the sidewalk may be met by a citizens arrest!

Two kids? maybe you can lay off there Officer Vigilante. I wouldn't want my two kids bike riding on Willingdon either. Was is really that hard for you toe step aside for 2.4 seconds of your day? Come on. Know it all social justice warriors like you are what give bike riders a bad name. Not the little family out for a weekend bike ride.

Whatever

It's not illegal to be on the sidewalk in the way that you can arrest someone. Fun fact: when you citizens arrest people and it's not valid it's assault and possibly other charges. Threatening people with kids? Get a life. That's so sad over a mild inconvenience.

quixotic

There are dingbats on the roads and sidewalks in this city in all weathers, no need to wait for the sun. Just be aware that you can't make a citizen's arrest for a provincial traffic act or municipal bylaw offence. Citizens only have powers to arrest for serious sections of the Criminal Code, which doesn't cover rude people riding bikes on the sidewalk. Should you try and effect such an arrest, the offender would be well within his or her rights to resist your unlawful arrest attempt by using force in self defence. Think about that carefully!

Chill out. There are worst things going on in this city. Maybe they aren't avid bike riders and are a bit timid about biking on the road. Also some streets just aren't bike friendly. Plus drivers are assholes in this city.

Before you get charged for assault ...

.. consider why the cyclist may be on the sidewalk. Is there glass in the bike lane or the road? Is the shoulder extremely tight? Is traffic heavy and intimidating? Has the bike lane been closed?

I know it is annoying to compete with cyclists on the sidewalk, and they should aim not be there, but do consider that cyclists have a right to ride, and a right to safety, and if the sidewalk is the best option for that, then you should probably not make a "citizens' arrest."

What I hate is that there really isn't a place for bikes on most of the roads. If they go on the road, the cars have to detour around them, sometimes into the oncoming traffic lane or risk driving too close to the bike. If they go on the sidewalk they endanger the pedestrians, requiring them to go on the road or otherwise to avoid them. If we rebuild our roads to accommodate bikes, then drivers get frustrated with the traffic congestion that results.
There really isn't a good scenario for bikes IMO and unfortunately I don't see it getting better anytime soon.

You cannot arrest someone for a motor vehicle act infraction, I mean, you can detain them to issue a ticket, but it's not an arrestable offense. And you have no authority to issue tickets. You'd be assaulting someone, falsely imprisoning, etc. You're just a nutter.

I'll use the magic word: please!

If you want your bike on the sidewalk, walk it. Feet on the ground, not on the pedals pretty please. We have special spaces for people who want to go faster than they can walk. They're called roads.

I've been clipped twice so far this year and it was super lame.

hey everybody

Parents should have the common sense to instruct their kids to go in single-file when encountering other people on the sidewalk; bikes, busy street or no.
