30 summers ago

I saw Peter Gabriel, Bryan Ferry, Billy Idol and Crowded House in concert. All riding high on the charts, in the clubs, on the air. Did I think at the time "this is the golden age - better suck it up good before it's all gone?" Not really- but holy Christ! Ever listen to the radio lately? Non stop torture station to station. Is it good to get this down with dumb? Like a deep drill - how far? Center of the Earth or what? Stop it Norton!!

It's all just a big disgusting popularity contest. There is very little talent. It's mostly about how sexy and raunchy you can possibly be.

There is fantastic music out there but it's not on corporate radio or a big part of popular culture like it used to be....a band or artist could have 2 Million youtube views and even music snobs haven't heard of them!

Yes, I agree today's music is torturous garbage. I look out and see so many useless no-talent hacks with millions of fans and wonder if the world has gone insane. Kanye West, Beyonce, Iggy Azalea, Sia... on and on and on. These dipshits have Youtube videos with a billion (that's right, a BILLION) hits and I just can't understand it. But for me, the best music decade was the 90's. God, I miss that decade so bad. Nirvana and Pearl Jam in their heyday, not to mention so many other acts in so many other genres that were great as well. It was also a great decade for Canadian music IMO.

Thanks to modern medicine and a greater awareness of health and fitness, those "golden age" artists are still touring today well into their 60's and 70's. These are the shows I've been attending lately because I'm so afraid they'll die and take their music with them. Plus they think I'm so gosh-darned-cute when they spot me in the crowd.

No I don't listen to the radio. I use a streaming service. I listen to old stuff, new stuff and old stuff that is new to me. All for just $10 a month. It's the best time to be a music lover.

We got to see real Canadian bands like 54-40, DOA, Chalk Circle, Skinny Puppy, SNFU, National Velvet, The Tragically Hip, NoMeansNo, etc when "Alternative" actually meant something.

This is how you know it's good

I liked pop music well into my 40s but eventually I had an almost allergic reaction to the grossly sexual, racist-stereotype-embracing garbage that is party music of today. And I was happy. Because youth music has always irritated the older generation, partly, I think, by design - it creates a barrier between them and us, and young people seem to relish having the youth identity. Let's face it, what else have they got besides dreams and ambitions and raw skills, they haven't yet proven themselves? So let them have their stuff! Our old fartness and feeling excluded from liking it is just, y'now, the circle of life.
