Karma Police

As a freelancer, I have separate, dedicated email accounts for work and for personal use. However, due to the sporadic nature of my work, I can't afford to have two separate cells so I'm forced to give my personal cell number to my clients as a secondary contact. Otherwise, I pretty much never give out my number – I don't want spam/telemarketers/Nigerian princes contacting me. So, imagine my surprise when I got a call late at night from some random drunk guy who called me by my name and then reminded me that he met me at some bar that I've never been to! I assured him I'd never been to that bar, told him he had the wrong number, and thought that was the end of it (although I was alarmed that he used my name). Over the next few weeks, he called again several times. It was only when I finally got snappy with him, explaining that the woman he was looking for gave him my name and number instead of her own that he finally believed me and stopped calling. To this day, I don't know who the woman was who used my contact info to get rid of this guy but my friends would never do something so sh*tty so it had to be someone from one of the places where I work/worked. What she couldn't know is that I was stalked by an "anonymous admirer" for almost a year when I was younger – it's one of the reasons that I keep my contact info as private as I can today. Her actions triggered a pretty significant anxiety spiral for me – I kept waking up at 4AM re-living old fears that today would be the day that my stalker would escalate from obscene phone calls and abusive emails to physical assault. So, thanks for that. I hope karma finds you.

It probably wasn't anyone giving out your number to target you, it was probably someone who just made up a number and it happened to be yours.

Omg I got this same phone call!!! Only it came in after I was already half-asleep and I didn't fully catch his name or the bar...but it did sound like the sort of place I might have gone to at some point. Was your guy also pathetically asking if you had any friends who might be interested? It was the most bizzare phone call and if I didn't have the timestamp on my phone to prove it, I would have assumed it was all a dream.
