reading a book instead of fb messes with my mind

Reading 'utopia for realists', only two pages in, and nothing makes sense anymore. The book sites data that we are living in the wealthiest and healthiest time in the history of humanity. Apparently crime rates are the lowest in recorded history, only 10% of the worlds population live in extreme poverty and almost everyone owns a cell phone..... but according to all the news articles in my fb feed, everything is shitty and millenials and trump are to blame. WHAT IS REAL? WHO DO I TRUST?

All three things can be the case at the same time, because yes things are better then ever for humanity as a whole, less worldwide poverty, longer life spans, less violence etc. The derided millennial's generally would like to see those gains shared more equally by everyone and to prevent progress obtained so far from being erased by the destruction of the planet or regressive ideology. It is also the case that Trump is a threat both to past gains and any future progress. he isn't very bright and believes in a zero-sum world of tribalism despite the long history of it's failure.

I know it's been said before, but I think it's true that the media definitely has influenced the way people think about their everyday lives. We are fed specific information that makes us fearful, and without truly knowing what is real or not, we adjust our lives around it. This has been going on for decades but with the predominance of smart phones it's epidemic. I'm not even sure how we as a population can step back from it in order to attempt to determine what is real anymore. Its very, very scary.

The book is correct. Life is basically better for almost everybody these days (at least, in the western world). I like to remind people that almost everyone lives as well as kings did 200 years ago. We have access to good food, housing, toilet paper, etc. But we lose perspective because we have a need to compare our lives against others. Why can't we be content??? The problem is the machine you used to register your comment. You now have 24 hour access to all the crap that goes on in the world. It's always been there, you just weren't aware of it. Turn off Fakebook and all the other nonsense except when used to solve problems and your life WILL get better. Your title is backwards - It's reading Fakebook that is messing with your mind!!!

The real world is what you see outside, the drama world is what you get filtered through a screen.
