Three Places

I've seen Gum in the urinals in three places: (1) New UBC Student Union Building (2) UBC Faculty of Law Building (3) Whole Foods I am pretty sure this says something horrible about these institutions.

It tells you people are lazy and gross. Doesn't say anything about the institution itself.

Well, that is maybe true of Whole Foods, because I bet it is mostly clients doing this, I can't imagine workers doing this to their co-workers.

But in the case of UBC, I think it says something about at least some of the students that they're admitting. I mean, I went to UBC a while back, when admission averages were a lot lower, and I don't remember ever seeing gum in the urinals, we certainly didn't need signs telling us how to use the urinals, even if some of us were admitted on 78% averages.

Like, if I were interviewing someone for articles and I went to the restroom after him and saw he'd put gum into the urinal, I know someone who wouldn't be getting articles, and I'd do my best to make sure nobody else gave him articles. Someone who lacks such basic human decency is an unfit and improper person to be a lawyer, no matter how good he did on his 90 credits to get into Law School, no matter how high he scored on the LSAT.

As for "lazy and gross," I don't think that's it, I mean, these people are not _stupid_, there's a garbage can like 15 feet from the urinals in both cases. A more likely explanation is that they're sadistic types who _get off_ on the idea that someone else is going to have to fish their gum out of the urinal.
