I want to have lots of kids

I am from Vancouver. I was raised in the school system here. I got the impression, from our school system, that having kids was bad. Unplanned pregnancies, for example, were deemed tragic and life-ruining. You also had to go to university and get a degree. Oddly enough, we are all 30 and they seem to have a family that is incredibly fulfilling. We, on the other hand, have no kids and a piece of paper that is worth shit-all to our employers. I wonder if Canada is going a bit too far by giving our kids the impression that kids are bad? They're teaching us all worst case scenarios and scaring people away from having kids in their early 20s.

... I don't have a lot of regrets.
Big regret #1 tho is that I had a few opportunities to have kids in my early/mid 20s, didn't do it.
Now it looks like it just won't happen.
The desired situation is that children are a "luxury good" for people with professions and that, really, there's no "need" for anyone else to have kids.

kids are good

and bad.

Having more kids is good because they will be productive when you retire, which means that the economy (and your pension) will keep on trucking.

Having more kids is bad because the world has too many mouths to feed, albeit mostly in the third world due to the habits of religion, lack of birth control, agricultural service requirements, and high infant morality.

One solution would be for the third world to migrate here, but, uh....no.

different oppinions.

Population growth is killing the planet....

Weird

Why are so many people against having kids? This is the unnatural thing I'm getting at. They're angry now but will be mad later.

Oh, this should be good.

I guess your carbon footprint isn't an issue? If you think finding secure work is difficult now wait 20 to 30 years where a lot of jobs will be replaced by Artificial Intelligence, robotics and 3D printing. The Chinese build houses with a 3D printer. Within 15 years trucks and taxis will have no drivers. AI is already doing jobs that were done by lawyers. Outsourcing is going be quaint in comparison. You better have some outstanding genetics if you want your children to compete in the future. Do you?

that's great

As long as you don't expect the rest of us to pay for them.

What are you talking about? I also went to school here and am in my 30s. Other than rigid birth control education and learning about Thomas Matheson's population prediction, nothing we did in school had anything to do with having babies. Or is that your issue?

was the most fulfilling and incredible thing I did in my life. We need to hear more stories like that. One or two, though, not 4 or 5.
(My Grandma had 13 ! Some people back then had big families to help look after the farm. I would not recommend that).

In many cases

the bond of love between a parent and a child is beyond anything you could imagine. People should be welcome to have a child if they feel this is the route for them and hopefully that they can afford it.
I taught in the school system for many years and they are right - unplanned pregnancies aren't the easist way to go, especially if it means you will be a single parent. Also getting an education is not usually a bad idea. Just pick a faculty based on some research of potential jobs.
