My ex got the dog in the break-up and has blocked-off all communication with me... it hurts so badly my eyes sometimes well-up with tears when I see other people walking their dogs. I never thought it could ache like this. Did anyone else lose a dog in a break-up? How long does it take to get over it?

Your ex sounds very selfish. I clicked "can't relate" because I shared a dog with a partner once, but a little while after the break-up I was able to visit with it again. I'm sorry for your loss :(

My ex and I shared two dogs. He wanted to split them up. I get one and he gets one. I told him he can go to hell. I got both the dogs.

A long time ago I had the same situation with my two cats. He wanted to take one. He used to blow smoke in their faces and not let them sleep on the bed. The was NO way this a-hole was getting that cat and I knew the one thing that would make him go away because this is how much of a dip he was - I gave him the stereo and that was that - easy breezy cover girl. My condolences go out to you but maybe in time you can find a way to see it again - if not maybe when you are ready, you can adopt one of your own? One that needs a good loving life.

@Not my dogs: You didn't need to tell him he can "go to hell", you sent him there. Getting over missing a pet is Hell.
@OP You aren't alone. My ex took away my access to our dog...I even trained him and named him as a puppy :( He still posts pictures of the dog all over his twitter and Facebook. If you haven't deleted all social media connected to your dog you MUST. You are just torturing yourself! I hope your ex grows-up over time, remembers your connection to the dog and reaches out on his own to let you have a visit. Nothing else you can do. Good luck. :)

For being so attached to an animal, you deserve to suffer.
Get another one.
Stop being a spoiled, mentally deranged westerner. Oh, that most of the world's people's problems were as simple as yours.

i'm checking in with you today and notice the reading link didn't copy on my previous post. i understand how you can miss your bond, connection, and life you had with your dog. what I know about my experience with "loss in life" is that it hurts a lot and the emotional pain is real. i don't believe there is any time limit to heal because grieving is individual and unique as the life lost. the life lost is not replaceable. my advice to you is to do whatever soothes your soul around this loss. i'm sure your dog misses you too yet I believe you are still connected and no one can take that away from you. since there is no contact or communication with your ex, as difficult as it is, you must find peace. there book is very good: "How to Survive The Loss of a Love" by Melba Colgrove, PhD., Harold H. Bloomfield, MD., & Peter McWilliams. maybe create a memorial, a treasure box or book of all your happy memories and times together, write a letter from your heart with all your feelings, thank your dog for everything he/she gave to you when you were together. keep this box or book in a special place. when you want to remember open it and spend some time. maybe this may help with healing your heart? allow yourself to feel. this dog's life matters to you. allow yourself to heal. we cannot control other people in our lives. we can accept what is. when we are in tune with the unknown, the known is peaceful. goodness should become human nature, because it is real in nature. may all beings be happy, healthy and free. May the happiness, health and freedom of our lives contribute to the happiness, health and freedom for all. ~Namaste. I wish you healing Love + Peace in every way always.
