... that Hastings Sunrise is now called the East Village. Who do we think we are? NYC? it sounds pretentious which my neighbourhood is not.

East Village? Seriously?
To be honest, I grew up there my whole life, and I didn't even know it was called "Hastings Sunrise" until recently. Even that sounds pretentious. To me it was just "home".

it certainly is not new york and comparing it to new york is laughable. this attempt to re-brand Vancouver is just good old capitalism trying to sell us something that's already good in a brand new package. bullshit!

When in doubt copy America! :P
(Having Walks of Fame in Toronto and Vancouver are embarassing and very unoriginal too)

I've lived in the East Village in NYC and if you've ever been there, you know it's not pretentious. It has character and charm. I do agree that Vancouver should come up with something more creative, East Harlem perhaps? ;)

I've been to the NYC East Village. I don't think it's pretentious there. I think the renaming of the Hastings/Nanaimo area to East Village is pretentious and comes across as provincial. This area is my home and I don't think the "East Village" fits this super neighborhood that I've lived in for years. I feel it shows that we lack our own pride.
