It wasn't the helmet that made you glance back
I saw you in the Pacific Centre as you were passing by the Apple store. You obviously noticed me too as we both turned our heads after we passed each other. You were strutting in...

I'm temping at a company where I sit in an area with one other person, with a desk divided by a thin cubicle wall. Every lunch hour she watches/listens to religious lectures discussing hell. I let it slide for the first two days, but today I asked her if she had some headphones she could wear. She said "no", and turned the volume down. That didn't really help. I wear my own earbuds most of the day to drown out the fact she talks to herself and reads out loud. They hurt my ears and I would like to give them a break and enjoy the fact her mouth is silent while she eats.

I was going to finish my rant by saying I'd like to get biblical on her ass, but in lieu of that, if anyone has any suggestions I welcome them. I was rushed during my initial posting.

Give her a cheap pair of headphones, or get some noise dampening ear plugs? Or patronize her in order to gain her trust, build on this facade of a relationship until it reaches a point where she shares a life altering secret with you, at this point blackmail her with this secret under the condition that she start wearing earphones.

Try earplugs or earbuds made of a soft material, Klipsch earbuds are dandy -- comfortable and block out unwanted sound. And practice patience. Good luck!

Do to others as you would have them do to you
I think it would be smart If you just went to her and talked to her about it. It is easier said than done but if she is a true Christian than she should be able to handle a talk properly (if she doesn't you can remind her of this bible scripture: Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the alter. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. Matthew 5:23-24). The loud sermons and reading out loud distract you from work. Its simple, its the truth and it's not feeding the fire.

Thanks for the ideas. I will probably leave a set of ear buds for her. Probably the least antagonistic approach and I do have a brand new set somewhere. :-)

Does your company have an HR department? If the headphone idea doesn't pan out, I would talk to HR about it. Obviously this will cause friction so use it as a last resort.

Unless this happens to be the best temp gig EVER! call your agency and ask to about reassigning somewhere less, um, hellish. Or switch agencies (you should have a few, anyway). You're a temp. Just as they can get rid of you for any reason from the moon phase to sneezing too loud, you are within your rights to an escape hatch. Just get another gig. Do it. Temping is bad enough without putting up with weirdos. (Unless you're exploiting them as characters in a screenplay.) Get out of there. You might feel better.
