Four-time Grammy winning pianist McCoy Tyner is a towering figure in the world of modern jazz - influencing the shape of the music form, his blues-based piano style continuing to inspire generations of improvisers. A National Endowment for the Arts "Jazz Master" recipient, Tyner's music and playing has transcended conventional styles to become one of the most identifiable sounds in improvised music. Today hailed globally as a master pianist, jazz stylist and one of the best living composers of the genre, Tyner started out as a groundbreaker at the core of what became one of the most seminal groups in jazz history, The John Coltrane Quartet. Considered a living jazz icon, Tyner has released nearly 80 albums.

With Tyner are bassist Gerald Cannon, drummer Eric Gravatt (best-known for his work in Weather Report in the '70s) and renowned avant-garde guitarist, Marc Ribot.

As one of the most important pianists of the last thirty years, McCoy Tyner's richly harmonic and percussive style of playing has contributed to many of jazz's greatest moments. More of those moments are in store at the Chan Centre on Saturday, November 15th.
