Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears headline Truck Stop Concert Series #1
June 11 show will also feature best of Vancouver’s soul and funk talent

It’s less than a month until Truck Stop Concert Series #1 kicks off a season of great live music at Red Truck Brewing. Headlined by Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, the line up for the June 11 soul/funk/R&B showcase is packed with talent to rock the parking lot all day.

The Truck Stop Concert Series show will represent a long-overdue return to Vancouver for Black Joe Lewis, who has spent the last few years recording and performing as a solo act. The great news for Vancouver fans of the Honeybears driving, funky sound is that the Truck Stop Concert Series show will be just the second show by the reunited line up which will follow up by touring the US this summer capped off with an appearance at Bumbershoot.

The Truck Stop Concert Series is just the headliner, though, it’s a full day of music and the remainder of the line up will showcase the depth and talent in Vancouver’s soul and funk music scene. There’s no one who does that better than three-time Grammy winner and Canadian legend Chin Injeti & the Lifetimes. From production and song writing to live performing, Chin is has been putting Vancouver on the musical map for decades and the Lifetimes are his live music project.

Dawn Pemberton from a different generation than Chin Injeti, but she’s building her own reputation for her powerful, gospel-rooted soul singing. Spanning everything from funk and jazz to soul and gospel, Dawn has is a leading light on Vancouver’s music scene and her 2015 Western Canadian Music Award for Best Urban Recording is a sign that she’s on rise.

While they formed in 2011, the roots and influences of The Ballantynes driving beats go all the way back to the party sounds of the soulful sixties. Their organ-heavy sound has been filling dancefloors since they first began to play and they’re sure to get feet tapping and hips shaking. Another local act that channels elements of classic soul and fills dance floors are the Star Captains. They mesh the spirit of 70s soul with modern sound design and instrumental technology for an irresistible beat-laced hybrid.

Last year, Tonye Agenaba was one of the surprise hits of the Truck Stop Concert Series and she’s returning to play this year with her new project, the Red, Gold & Green Machine. The new band combines funk with hip-hop and reggae for an irresistible party groove.
