Documents show B.C. Liberal government examined HST before election: reports

Comments

Documents obtained by several B.C. media outlets reveal provincial government officials were looking into the harmonized sales tax in the months before the Liberals’ May 2009 re-election.

The documents, released under provincial freedom of information legislation, show B.C. government officials had been in contact with federal officials regarding the tax, according to reports today (September 1) from the CBC, CKNW, and the Globe and Mail.

Provincial officials were also aware the economic benefits of introducing the tax might take years to materialize, according to the documents.

The HST was announced in July 2009 to widespread opposition that eventually fuelled a successful petition campaign that gathered more than 550,000 valid signatures across B.C.

Premier Gordon Campbell told reporters in August 2009 that the 12-percent tax “was not anywhere on our radar” during the election.

Finance Minister Colin Hansen affirms he was not aware of the HST discussions until the provincial election was over.

“At no time did anybody at the political level in our government ask ministry of finance officials to put any information together or do any work on the HST prior to the third week of May last year,” Hansen told the Globe in an interview yesterday.

Liars Liars and more Liars. We really need to recall this whole liberal party. Why would this tax be imposed now, when we are still battling a major recession when our leaders know it will cause more unemployment and have a negative impact on our gdp, for five or more years. This is insanity, do thay want to destroy the middle class???

This government has lost the confidence of the people - it is unfit to lead and must either step down or be removed.

Hey Hannibal I agree except they, the whole caucus, should resign. The election was a fraud and the fraudsters should be held accountable.

When will the poor and middle class learn that they out number and therefore can out vote the wealthy-who always vote?
Right-wingers are all that are heard in mainstream media and who-big corporations that is- benefit the most from Gordo and Harpo and their motherfucking followers. There is something wrong when so many households have to need double wage earners. Whatever happened to our nice little country-it's turned into an Amerika wannabe; mean, ignorant and mercenary.

To hell with recall or a free vote, based on what we are now seeing, I am calling on this government to resign and now face the voters.

In my opinion, the actions of the premier and the finance minister could be considered as criminal breach of trust (not fraud). There is a contract between voters and government. Both the premier and the finance minister had received a 'good' from voters in the provincial general election in 2005 (custody of government and $$$).

The 'renewal' of this contract was extinguished (writ period) subsequent general election 2009. These two individuals - Campbell/Hansen retained the good in their possession through false statements made prior to the election (budget) and no mention of the HST - which false statements were made in waves afterward.

To wit: the voter was never properly given the opportunity to reallocate this 'good' to the custody of another in a new contract (ie New Democrats) - who lost by 2%+ only.

The Writ period signifies essentially that no-one controls the 'good' until the the election results are determined by Elections BC.

The political wrong(s) are obvious - however because the argument can also be made that the actions of both the premier and finance minister prior to the Writ period and during the Writ period (over $$ matters) - the argument can further be made that neither of these two had any intention of permitting the 'good' to be re-allocated by the owner of the good - the voter-to the custody of the entity (party) of their choice pursuant to the Elections Act including another - namely the NDP

The politics of guilt are beyond argument, I believe the criminality of their actions needs to be explored.

Gordon Campbell was too busy looking for photo ops to be aware of anything and Hansen probably read the documents and told his staff not to touch it until after the election, thus giving just a sniggle of truth to what he says. But like all competent liars, he can claim a poor memory and hide the truth among the lies. If he had any decency, he would resign. But, then again, we are talking about Colin (I don't remember) Hansen.

Wilful blindness is no defense - a fast track civil action would provide for some 'speedy' discovery through affidavit -- if a civil servant comes forward and affirms Hansen's awareness - then the Attorney General's office needs to get involved ----

Mssrs Campbell and Hansen cannot keep doing this -- its bringing government into serious disrepute.

Given the direction these two nuisances (see VP) are going - I still say the soonest we know the legislature isn't opening - we head to Victoria and take it over --

no police - and no security doors open - peaceful takeover by non-elected public (Notice from gpr).

that or the civil servants involved should be fired with cause.

Campbell is the leader of the pack
To busy getting his picture taken is why legislature is only open for 6 months of the year and no need to listen to opposition when no one is in the house. Campell knows everything that is going on in his party when it comes to policy and cash and it certainly wasn't Hansen that pushed the HST he is a weakling at best. Come now look at Hansen he is timid, not a leader, a follower so please lets get it straight instead of living in some lala land where this person might have done that and so on when the facts speak for themselves. (emails excluded or rubbed out in case someone catchs on)

They all knew. All of them had access to the CD Howe report before the election. They must have known what Gordo and the rest of the LIARS were planning for the upcomming election. They should all resign and as Glen P Robbins suggests, face criminal charges.

Having said that I also agree with Glen that we, the people of BC should take over the legislature. I'm sure we can do a much better job of running the government that this bunch.

Campbell and Hansen, could care less about the Liberal Party name. Campbell is not a Liberal. Other premiers, would step down to save the party, Campbell and Hansen, are trampling their party right into the mud. We also have seen, Campbell and Hansen, lie, deceive, and cheat to win. However, they have support from Harper. Most people in BC know, Campbell, Hansen are Harper's boys. BC's HST goes directly to Harper. BC citizens, will see no benefits, from the HST, what-so-ever. The provincial budget taxes, were bad enough, couple those taxes with the HST on pretty well everything else......The burden is impossible, for thousands of BC people. Where in the hell, are the logistics, to tax the people, who, are still not on their feet. Some have lost their homes, vehicles and everything they had. The C.R.A. has a class action suit, against them. Can there also be a class action, against Campbell and Hansen?
