Urban Fare launches grilled cheese bar

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Urban Fare’s Shangri-La location at 1133 Alberni Street has just launched a new grilled cheese bar, where a selection of 10 gooey varieties are heated to order. These include a pulled pork sandwich with applewood-smoked Cheddar, a Caprese sandwich with buffalo mozzarella and fresh tomato, and a sourdough sandwich stuffed with aged Cheddar and mac ’n’ cheese. Try the Carnivore ($7.49), a kicky number oozing with Havarti, jalapeño Jack, chipotle aioli, and creole-fried crocodile. (Yes, it tastes like chicken.) Look for a rotating selection of grilled cheese sandwiches ($4.99 to $7.49) at other Urban Fare locations.

Nobody is going to buy crocodile. I've tried it and it is tough as nails with no appreciable taste--certainly not what you want in a grilled cheese. Let's see how long that menu item lasts.

      Love the gooey

Just found out about their April promotion today. My "Carnivore" -- with the tastes-like-chicken CROCODILE meat -- came with a FREE small soup of choice.
Could have been hotter on the inside but I don't think they could have toasted the bun anymore without burning it. That, and it's possible that there are regulations about how hot something can be.

The crocodile wasn't bad. They use cubes of it. Interesting on paper, but no clearly interesting taste. The sandwich itself was pretty decent, though. Again, would've been better if it turned out hotter inside.

Before you eat any croc. or any imported seafood-you might to ask yourself these questions: where did it come from, does it contain toxins and how safe is it?
All info in this great article in the Straight- 'Seafood Toxic Cocktail":

Or better yet, stick to local you will be a lot healthier.

The crocodile sold at Urban Fare is sourced by Hills Foods, which tells me it comes farmed from Queensland, Australia. Here's the link to their suppliers if you want more info
