Hainanese chicken rice comforts at Mamalee Malaysian Delight

A simple dish often found at hawker stalls in Southeast Asia, Hainanese chicken rice doesn’t look like much on the plate. But the slowly boiled, skin-on chicken is deceptively flavourful, and once you’re hooked, it’s a comfort food you’ll crave whenever it’s mentioned.

Mamalee Malaysian Delight (3144 West Broadway) makes a good version with plump chicken slices, well-prepared rice, and just enough chili and ginger sauces to add some tang.

The plate ($9.95 small/$12.50 large) comes with a small bowl of chicken soup that’s best sipped between bites of rice; be sure to ask for it with the meal, despite the temptation to tuck in while you wait.
