Ice cream comes with a big scoop of charm at Glenburn Soda Fountain and Confectionery in North Burnaby (4090 Hastings Street). The small shop, which looks as if it’s leapt off the pages of an Archie comic, serves ice cream from Abbotsford’s Birchwood Dairy in traditional, old-fashioned glassware. Along with sundaes, malts, and floats, there are sodas made to order with a choice of syrups. For something different, try a Brooklyn egg cream ($4), which is crafted from Fox’s U-Bet chocolate syrup imported from New York, whole milk, and carbonated water. (That’s right, no egg!) Whimsical striped paper straws add to the fun.
