The cooler fall weather marks the start of comfort-food season, when we crave soups, stews, and other stick-to-your-ribs fare. Vancouver-based author Jennifer Browne’s new book, Vegetarian Comfort Foods (Skyhorse, $22.99), offers alternatives to meat-heavy dishes.

Subtitled The Happy Healthy Gut Guide to Delicious Plant-Based Cooking, the book focuses on the holistic food practices and mindful eating that helped Browne overcome her digestive troubles. It includes chapters on cleansing, juicing, smoothies, and raw salads, as well as recipes for dishes like stuffed portobello mushrooms, eggplant lasagna, and chocolate chia pudding.
