9 places in Vancouver to get your drink on for St. Patrick’s Day 2016

    1 of 10 2 of 10

St. Patrick’s Day lands on a Thursday (March 17) this year, which is good news for devoted and wannabe Irish people alike who have an excuse to knock back pints of Guinness and green-tinged beer well into the weekend. And though the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade has already passed, you can bet that tons of local businesses—of Irish origin and otherwise—will be taking advantage of the well-timed holiday with a slew of events that take place before, on, and after St. Paddy’s Day.

Here are nine Vancouver joints where you can get in on the leprechaun-, clover-, and beer-fueled fun this St. Patrick’s Day and onward.

      The Blarney Stone

The Blarney Stone, 216 Carrall Street

True St. Paddy’s Day keeners know that the festivities shouldn’t be restricted to a single day. Case in point: the Blarney Stone, where the party kicked off earlier this week with Irish happy hour, brunch, and acoustic events. For the eve of St. Patrick’s Day tonight (March 16), the Gastown joint is counting down to midnight with live music by local folk-fusion group The Wheat in the Barley, a bevy of Irish dancers, and $13.50 pitchers of Alexander Keith’s. For the big day tomorrow (March 17), the pub is shutting down the entire 200 block of Carrall Street from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., when attendees can take in a tasty brunch buffet, dance, live music, and circus performances, and free balloons and face painting.

Tickets for tonight’s St. Paddy’s Day Eve event are $10 at the door and can be purchased online in advance. Tickets for tomorrow’s street party are $25 and can be purchased here.

      The Wolf & Hound

The Wolf & Hound, 3617 West Broadway Street

The Wolf & Hound is opening its doors in Kitsilano at 4 p.m. tomorrow (March 17) and will play host to a jam-packed lineup of live entertainment. Local musician Bob Collins will perform a mix of classic and contemporary Celtic tunes and the Irish Wakers will present a musical medley of fiddle, Irish flute, guitar, and more. Dancers from the O’Connor-O’Brien School of Irish Dancing will also hit the floor and the pub will be giving away loot to lucky guests every 15 minutes. Cover to the event is $10.

      Dogwood Brewing

      Dogwood Brewing, 8284 Sherbrooke Street

Dogwood Brewing’s first anniversary just so happens to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day, so the all-organic microbrewery is throwing a St. Patrick’s Beernanza this Thursday (March 17). The event will channel Dogwood’s Irish background (brewmaster and CEO Claire Wilson hails from Ireland) through a number of special handcrafted casks, games, and live music by local country-blues duo Chicken-Like Birds. There’ll even be a DIY baked potato bar—because what pairs better with drinkable carbs than their warm, sour cream- and bacon-topped counterpart? Leave the car at home: Dogwood is offering a free shuttle service to Marine Drive station, so you can go ahead and let loose.

Tickets to the Beernanza are $20 and can be purchased online. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP by email to Carly at Dogwood Brewing before 5 p.m. tonight (March 16).

      Doolin's Irish Pub

Doolin’s Irish Pub, 654 Nelson Street

Doolin’s is billing its St. Patrick’s Day celebration as the “biggest party of the year” and we’re inclined to believe this isn’t just a hyperbole. Doors open at the downtown establishment bright and early (for those who were drinking the night before, anyway) tomorrow (March 17) at 11:30 a.m. and the festivities will continue into the wee hours of the morning. Expect all-day entertainment from Nathan Down, The Flanagans, Mairi Rankin & Jenny Ritter, and DJ Johnny Awesome, plus Jameson “Hitchhiker” specials which allow you to score $4.75 shots of whiskey.

Lunch reservations until 3 p.m. are currently being accepted and can be made by email or phone at 604-605-4328.

      Imperial Vancouver

      The Imperial, 319 Main Street

From the same team who brings the city Dîner en Blanc, Harvest Haus, and the Deighton Cup comes a St. Patrick’s Day party sans the garish green beer. The inaugural Keltic Landing will take over the Imperial from Thursday to Friday (March 17 to 18), where attendees will be transported to the Emerald Isle and Scottish Highlands through a fully immersive setup. Chow down on traditional Irish fare by Savoury Chef, lose yourself in the sounds of harps, fiddles, and bagpipes, and enjoy ales, ciders, and Irish stouts, plus a few drams of Irish and Scottish whiskey, all in one spot. Celtic garb (think flower crowns and plaid newsboy caps) is highly encouraged.

Doors open at 6 p.m. tomorrow (March 17) and 8 p.m. on Friday (March 18). Tickets start at $35 and can be purchased online.

      Lamplighter Public House

Lamplighter Public House, 92 Water Street

One of Donnelly Group’s most popular pubs is doing St. Paddy’s Day right with all-day specials on drinks that have become practically synonymous with Irish heritage. Doors open at the Gastown hub at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday (March 17), where you can indulge in $6 pints of Guinness, $5 drams of Jameson, and a special menu of homey, Irish-inspired dishes. Those with work obligations need not worry about missing out on the fun: local cover band the Vagabonds takes to the stage from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. for an evening of non-stop entertainment.

      Dubh Linn Gate

Dubh Linn Gate, 1601 Main Street

Get over to Dubh Linn Gate tomorrow (March 17) for not only a good ol’ St. Patrick’s Day shindig, but a little taste of summer, too. The Irish pub will be hosting a barbeque on its Main Street patio, where partygoers can dig into locally sourced Guinness bangers. Inside, entertainment will be provided by local bands the Doolins, the Roommates, and the Whisky Dicks, as well as two Irish dance troupes. Dubh Linn Gate will also have Jameson “Hitchhikers” (an add-on whisky shot to a glass of beer) and its special Crabby Patty cocktail—a mix of ginger beer and Guinness—on special.

Doors open at 11 a.m. and cover is $10. No reservations are being accepted, so be sure to arrive early.

      Yaletown Brewing Company

Yaletown Brewing Company, 1111 Mainland Street

Keep the celebrations alive and well into Saturday (March 19) with a trip to Yaletown Brewing Company, where an Irish Caskival will be taking place. The one-day-only event will feature 12 specially crafted porters, stouts, and other Irish-inspired suds from B.C. breweries like Whistler BrewHouse, Red Truck Beer Company, Moody Ales, R&B Brewing Co., Steamworks Brewing Company, Postmark Brewing, and Persephone Brewing Company.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and $20 will get you samplers of each beer.

      The Irish Heather

The Irish Heather, 210 Carrall Street

It’s only fitting that Vancouver’s only Irish-owned bar is sticking to its roots and celebrating St. Patrick’s Day the old-fashioned way, i.e. without the flashy Mardi Gras beads and plastic clovers. Live music, pipers, and dancers will converge at the Irish Heather on Thursday (March 17), where you can kick back with a pint of Irish beer or whiskey over a hearty lunch or dinner. The gastropub is even expanding its party to the former Rainier Provisions space across the street, so you don’t have to worry about battling shoulder-to-shoulder crowds to get to the bar. And the best part? There’s absolutely no cover.

The celebration starts at 11:30 a.m. and reservations by email are highly recommended.
