While the second annual Vancouver Dumpling Cook Off doesn’t happen until next month, now’s the time to act if you’re a dumpling fan.

The event pits 20 local restaurants against each other to create the best version of “something wrapped in something”, and those who buy a Golden Dumpling Passport get to taste all the creations that are being judged.

The reigning champion is PiDGiN for its duck confit and truffle dumpling. Other competitors include Ask For Luigi, Bestie, Harvest Community Foods, Homer St Cafe and Bar, Maenam, Wildebeest, Vij’s, and Winner Winner.

The Cook Off runs in conjunction with the Chinatown Festival and the Vancouver Chinatown Business Improvement Association. The event also includes a dumpling-eating contest; those interested in being contestants can sign up here

For the Cook Off, passports cost $30 plus service charge online and include one dumpling from each restaurant station. Proceeds go to the Chinese Elders Community Kitchen, a program of the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre that creates a safe space where Chinese elders can cook and share meals.

One hundred tickets at $35 each will also be available on event day. It all happens on August 10 from noon to 5 p.m. in the 100 block of Keefer Street in Chinatown; see goldendumpling.ca/ for more details.
