Long Table Distillery’s popular London Dry Gin has earned first place in the gin category of the inaugural Vancouver International Spirits Competition.

Long Table’s London Dry Gin beat out a number of domestic and international gins to claim the title, including varieties from the Netherlands, U.K., and Czech Republic. The all-Canadian judging panel, which included local bar stars like Lauren Mote, Jay Jones, and Shaun Layton, awarded Long Table’s flagship spirit the top prize for its “complex balance of eight botanicals and bold forward notes of evergreen, juniper and citrus”.

Canada was well represented in the contest, which is the largest professional judging competition of domestic and international spirits in B.C. In the grape brandy category, first place was awarded to the Surrey-based Central City Brewers + Distillers for its Spirit of Merlot.

Meanwhile, B.C. distilleries demonstrated a steady boom of the region’s craft gin industry with a strong showing in the gin group. The Liberty Distillery, Ampersand Distilling Company, Merridale Craft Distillery, Wayward Distillation HouseOkanagan Spirits Craft Distillery, Sheringham Distillery, Victoria Distillers, and Dubh Glas Distillery all earned a spot on the list of top gins overall with their respective submissions.

Okanagan Spirits’ blackcurrant and raspberry liqueurs also received shout-outs in the liqueurs category, while Long Table’s Texada Vodka and Ampersand’s Per Se Vodka got nods in the vodka round.

For whisky, William White Grain Spirit from B.C.’s Sheringham was recognized alongside two other Canadian names: Alberta’s Canadian Rockies 21-Year-Old and Spicebox Whisky’s Cinnamon Whisky.
