Portable Maldon Sea Salt Flakes liven up picnics

    1 of 1 2 of 1

If, like Nigella Lawson, you’re a fan of Maldon Sea Salt Flakes, you probably adore the British brand’s delicate, flat crystals and swear by them for finishing dishes.

While it might be a little fanatical to carry your own packet of salt in your bag for restaurant emergencies, it’s altogether reasonable to bring a small amount to sprinkle on a steak—or anything that needs some oomph—at a picnic or barbecue.

Tango’s Gourmet Meats (865 Denman Street) sells adorable metal tins of the salt ($1.98) that are about the size of a pack of mints. Just try not to act too pretentious when you pull one out.

I'm sure they're nice, but in the interests of local eating, may I recommend the BC-made Saltwest? It is delicious, comes in some interesting combos, and they make also smoke peppercorns for your grinder - wonderful flavour for those of us transitioning off bacon.
