Metro Vancouver has its share of outstanding baristas, and four more have just done the region proud.

Cole Trepanier and CJ Yang, both of 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters, placed first and second, respectively, at the Western Regional Barista Competition held on Saturday (July 26). Edmond Keung from Moving Coffee, which roasts coffee in Vancouver, and Stacey Linden from Ladner's Stir Coffee House placed third and fourth.

According to a news release, the competition took place at Rocanini Coffee Roasters and involved presentations on issues affecting the coffee industry, such as coffee leaf rust and processing methods. Baristas served a team of judges espressos, cappuccinos, and signature beverages and were scored on criteria that emphasized cleanliness, taste, professionalism, efficiency, and mastery of craft.

The four winners from Western Canada will be among the 16 competitors at the Canadian National Barista Competition in Mississauga, Ontario, on September 28 and 29.
