A popular Irish pub is set to launch its third location along South False Creek. Mahony & Sons (601 Stamps Landing) will open in the location previously occupied by Monk McQueens restaurant on Monday (August 18) at 11 a.m.

The Vancouver-based chain of restaurants is owned by the Mahony family. They launched the first Mahony & Sons at UBC in 2006. Five years later, a second location near the convention centre at Burrard Landing opened its doors. On January 1, 2013, Mahony’s took over the Stamps Landing restaurant location from Monk McQueens after a 26-year run.

“We have been working flat out to bring this space to life,” Chris Mahony, one of five brothers who co-own Mahony & Sons, stated in a news release. “We strilled the old restaurant back entirely and have been rebuilding it to create a welcoming Irish restaurant experience.”

The new 10,000 square-foot two-level restaurant includes 600 seats—300 inside and another 300 on the patio. Inside the restaurant, diners can choose to sit on the ground floor (featuring traditional Irish pub décor) or on the second floor, where modern fixtures, high ceilings, and waterfront views can be enjoyed. At a media preview on August 14, Chris Mahony said that all of the restaurants furniture and décor are made in Ireland and that Irish artists were flown to Vancouver to create authentic Celtic murals.

The restaurant offers several areas for private dining—including a closed-off 12-seat patio on the second floor that can be reserved for large groups. Unique to this Mahony’s location is an oyster bar on one side of the 360-degree ground-floor bar.

Executive chef Paul Nguyen, who has been with the company since its inception and is a graduate of the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, has created a menu that includes traditional pub fare and local influences.

“We offer a selection of traditional Irish dishes such as our braised lamb shank Irish stew, but we also have a great mix of other cuisine including Asian fusion and classic English,” Nguyen said in a press statement. “This mix is very Vancouver.”

In other words, don’t be surprised to find a lamb-dip sandwich next to Thai panang curry on the menu.
