The third annual  Gastown BBQ & Chili Festival happens this weekend (August 30 and 31) in the 200 block of Carrall Street, between Water and Cordova streets.

Thirteen restaurants will be competing in a cook-off for the best chicken wings, pork ribs, slow-roasted pork, and beef brisket. There will be samples aplenty, and $10 buys four tasting tokens.

Proceeds go to Athletics for Kids, a charity that supports youth participation in amateur sports.

Other highlights include wing-eating contests on both Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m., and a pig roast on Sunday from 5 p.m.

The latter takes place at the Blarney Stone with a Hawaiian luau theme and a headlining performance by Bend Sinister. Five whole hogs will be smoked and roasted for sandwiches, which will be available at $10 each, or $12 for a roasted pork plate with one side dish.

See the Blarney Stone's website for a complete schedule of events.
