Vancouver to lose social justice hub as Heartwood Café announces closure
Sadly, Vancouver is losing another social activism space—yet again.
Heartwood Community Café announced today (June 30) that it will be shutting down its Mount Pleasant bistro on August 15.
The café arose from the (metaphorical) ashes of Rhizome Café, which closed in July 2013.
In August 2013, Heartwood opened in the former Rhizome space at 317 East Broadway.
After the collapse of Rhizome, Trinity United Church devoted financial support to help the Rhizhome Café vision continue. The church's congregation has been active in social causes such as migrant justice, mining resistance, and LGBTQ rights.
It served a social justice hub and gathering spot for racialized, indigenous, LGBTQ, youth, arts, and marginalized communities.
They also have a health-focused, vegetarian-oriented menu, with items such as vegan-pulled pork (smokey bourbon barbecue jackfruit), Thai red curry, and a black bean veggie burger.
There will be a farewell party held on August 12, which will also serve as a fundraiser for Gallery Gachet, the Downtown Eastside artist-run space devoted to mental-health issues that had its core funding cut by the B.C. government in September.
While there's still time to visit the bistro before it closes, its leadership team is welcoming ideas and suggestions about building community spaces and continuing on the legacy started by Rhizome Café.
