Central City adds to sour series with cherry-infused Sour Kriek II

As much as we loved it, it's time for Central City Brewing’s Sour Brown I to step aside: the second in the Surrey-based brewery's sour series is here, and we can't wait to try it.

While kettle sours have become more and more common at local craft breweries, the Sour Kriek II—a Belgian-style sour red ale—is unique in that it is brewed in traditional Belgian fashion: aged for two years in wine barrels and French foeders, the new brew is said to be big-bodied with earthy tones and notes of cherry.

Like its predecessor, the Sour Kriek II (10.9 percent ABV) is a limited edition brew, available in 750 mL bottles. While the Brown was rich and malty, brewmaster Gary Lohin says the Kriek brings a refreshingly tart flavour profile, thanks to the addition of cherries.

“We’re very pleased with the results of our sour series especially since we went with the traditional Belgian method of souring the beers and using Cabernet Sauvignon oak barrels and French oak foeders,” Lohin said in a press release.

"The Sour Kriek II is a different sour in that we infused it with cherries to add complexity to this two-year-old beer. It's a little more tart with a beautiful cherry finish that marries so well with the sour yeast culture we use.”

The limited edition brew will be available in select private liquor stores, and at Central City's brewery in Surrey.
