The Olympics may be getting all the headlines these days, but a few Vancouver chefs are doing a little championship training themselves.

Three local culinary masters have been selected to participate in B.C.’s Gold Medal Plates, an annual competition that takes place at the Victoria Conference Centre on November 17.

The winner then moves on to the Canadian Culinary Championships, happening in Kelowna in February 2017.

Jefferson Alvarez  of Mosquito, Ricardo Valverde of Ancora Waterfront Dining and Patio, and Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre’s OceanWise chef Ned Bell will face off against each other and seven other chefs from throughout B.C.

The other competition consists of the Fairmont Empress’s Morgan Wilson, Toque Catering’s Nicholas Waters, Nourish Kitchen & Café’s Sergio Hernandez, and North 48’s Sam Chalmers, all from Victoria, as well as  Jesse McCleery of Pilgrimme Restaurant (Galiano Island), Mark Filatow of Kelowna’s Waterfront Wines, and Rob Walker from Liquidity Wines Bistro in Okanagan Falls.

Last year’s Gold Medal Chef, Alex Chen of Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar, went on to win Bronze at the Canadian Culinary Championships this past February.

Net proceeds from the Gold Medal Plates go toward the Canadian Olympic Foundation, which supports Olympic athletes and high-performance programs. Since its inception, Gold Medal Plates competitions across Canada have raised close to $11 million for the cause.
