8 places to find Christmas treats in Metro Vancouver

    1 of 9 2 of 9

It’s not the best time of the year to go on a sugar-free diet, because there are so many delicious holiday treats popping up around town.

Spare your mind the stress of restraining from sweets, and just indulge a little—you deserve it. Besides, you need the extra layer of fat to keep warm during the cold winter days (Vancouver is finally experiencing the December chill).

From decadent yule logs to sugar cookies, penguin-shaped chocolate to German Christmas bread, Vancouver has something to satisfy each type of sweet tooth.

Here are 8 places to find Christmas treats around the city.

      The "Winter Morning" yule log.
      French Made Baking

      FRENCH MADE BAKING (81 Kingsway)

Customers will find three different kinds of yule logs, including the photogenic “Winter Morning” flavour—made with vanilla cheesecake mousse, raspberry-blackcurrant mousse, and almond cream shortbread.  The bakery is also offering special macaron flavours, such as eggnog cream, orange gingerbread, and more.

      Beaucoup's Coffee Mont Blanc.
      Beaucoup Bakery & Café/Instagram

BEAUCOUP BAKERY & CAFÉ (2150 Fir Street)

Its holiday chestnut collection features a coffee Mont Blanc—made with chestnut vermicelli, coffee crème Chantilly, and filled with crunchy meringue and coffee streusel crumbs. If you’re keen on grabbing one (or a few), be sure to head there early to avoid disappointment as these goodies sell out fast.

      Melting Snowman chocolate showpiece.
      Chez Christophe

CHEZ CHRISTOPHE CHOCOLATERIE PATISSERIE (4717 Hastings Street)

Check out its limited holiday chocolate showpieces that include sliding penguins and artistically melting snowmen. Various handcrafted chocolates are also hidden inside each showpiece, so consider it a sweet surprise. For the yule log-lovers, there are three limited edition flavours to choose from (La Chocolatee, Mont Blanc, and Tropical Santa), which can be pre-ordered by phone or in person.

Crispy Chocolate Cherry Orange ‘Tea Cake’.
      Wild Sweets

WILD SWEETS (2145-12191 Hammersmith Way, Richmond)

Get festive at your holiday parties with its crispy chocolate cherry orange ‘tea cake’—an unconventional Christmas fruit cake made with three types of dried fruits. The cake is placed over a crunchy and buttery cookie, wrapped in a thin layer of almond paste, and completed with a dark chocolate coating. Your guests may fight over this mouth-watering dessert.

Christmas Stollen: traditional German Christmas bread.
      Thomas Haas

THOMAS HAAS CHOCOLATES & PATISSERIE (2539 West Broadway and 998 Harbourside Drive, North Vancouver)

This popular sweets shop offers ‘Christmas Stollen’—traditional German Christmas bread with almonds, zested oranges, and rum-soaked golden raisins. Its holiday chocolate collection features airbrushed chocolate ornaments, truffle trees, and an iconic Tannenbaum filled with truffles and white chocolate snowflakes. It’s almost too pretty to devour. Almost.

      Fancy sugar cookie.
      Sweet Bake Shop

SWEET BAKE SHOP POP-UP (LYNNsteven Boutique, 225 Carrall Street)

This two day pop-up shop will feature holiday-themed sugar cookies, signature cupcakes, and gourmet macarons (in the form of cute little snowmen). If you’ve been missing the goodies from the now-closed Sweet Bake Shop storefront, stop by and grab some this weekend (December 10 and 11) from 11 to 7 p.m. (Saturday) and 11 to 5 p.m. (Sunday) to curb your cravings.

A limited edition Douglas Fir éclair.
      Beta5 Chocolates

      BETA5 CHOCOLATES (413 Industrial Avenue)

Die-hard Beta5 fans will know that this shop never disappoints when it comes to any type of seasonal collection. Its latest drool-worthy items include Paris-themed chocolates, a “lump of coal” (made with dark rum caramel, eggnog ganache, spiced pecan praline, in a 63% dark chocolate shell), and a Douglas Fir éclair that pays homage to classic bûche de Noëls (yule logs). But the item that we’re digging the most is its adorable cream puff snowman—filled with light milk chocolate and chestnut mousse, mandarin jelly, and vanilla custard. This crowd-pleaser is available through December 31, 2016.

      LIttle packages of goodness.
      The Lemon Square

THE LEMON SQUARE (various stockist locations)

It’s true that these bite-sized pieces of heaven can be eaten throughout the year, but something about its little red ribbon during the holidays makes it a festive treat. Made with fresh lemons, B.C. butter, and coconut, these babies are—we kid you not—highly addictive. If you’re planning on picking something up for any kind of Christmas party, this is the humble item that will wow the crowd. Its annual open house and shopping night (400 Industrial Avenue) takes place on December 22 (5:30 to 10 p.m.) for those looking for last-minute stocking stuffers.
