We've got two eatery closures to report—one of a Hungarian café that didn't last past its first year of operations, and another that means it's the end of an era for an English Bay fave.

Original Milestones shutters

Milestones has passed a milestone: its original location at English Bay has closed.

A summertime favourite for English Bay beachgoers, the 1210 Denman Street location opened in 1989, beginning what would become a chain of restaurants that now spans the country. The company has over 50 locations in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland.

Since its opened its Denman Street location, several other competitors moved into the area, including the beachside Cactus Club across the street, Beach Bay Café and Patio, and Hub Restaurant.  

Meanwhile, the company is in the midst of reinvigorating its brand.

The Milestones Park Royal location relaunched on June 20. The 6,400-square-foot renovated restaurant featuring an indoor and outdoor bar, an all-season patio, updated décor with First Nations art, and new menu items, such as prime rib sliders and coconut-marinated calamari strips.

Milestones has three locations in Vancouver; two in Surrey; and one each in Coquitlam, Richmond, Langley, and Abbotsford.

A new location opened at Tsawwassen Mills shopping mall at 5000 Canoe Pass Way on December 5.

The company did not respond to requests for interviews from the Georgia Straight.

Chimney cake shop closes

There's sad news for fans of Hungarian baked goods.

Less than a year old, the Kürtősh Chimney Cake Café has closed in Kerrisdale at 2285 West 41^st Avenue.

The sweet 'n' petite spot, which opened in March, specialized in kürtőskalács. Also known as chimney cakes, these bread-like cylinders are made by roasting strips of dough around a cone-shaped spit while basted with melted butter.

Kürtősh served their offerings coated with sweet or savoury toppings, such as almond, coconut, Nutella, Oreo, matcha, cheese, bacon, and more.

However, for those seeking chimney cakes in Vancouver, they can also be found at Transylvania Traditions Bakery at 1111 Davie Street.

They're also being sold at the Vancouver Christmas Market (held at Jack Poole Plaza at 1055 Canada Place), which runs until December 31.
