Granville Island Scottish Ale a welcome departure from winter's heavy hitters

Now that we seem to be done with the snow and freezing temperatures, beer drinkers might be finding themselves less interested in porters and stouts, and more inclined to sip on something a little less heavy.

Enter Granville Island's brand new small batch brew, a smooth Scottish Ale. The amber-coloured ale checks all the boxes when it comes to the subtle nuances of this particular style.

With notes of toasted malt and caramel, a slightly sweet aroma, and a warming, rich mouthfeel, the local brewery's take perfectly mimics the smoky flavours that are often found in other, oak barrel-aged iterations of this classic style.

Like many Scottish Ales, ABV tends to be slightly higher than the average beer, and Granville Island's rings in at 6.5 percent, making for a beverage that is best sipped and not slammed.

(Unless of course, you're looking to get gooned—in which case, it might be worth your while to explore this list of 30 different ways Scots like describe being drunk. We're fond of 'rat-arsed'.)

Check out Granville Island's latest small batch at the brewery (1441 Cartwright Street), and in select speciality liquor stores near you.
