New pizzerias in Vancouver: Stretch Roman Pizza, Assembli, and more

If you believe that you can never have too much pizza (and who doesn't?), here are a bunch of pizzerias that have been opening up throughout town over the past little while (or are about to in the near future).

      Stretch those slices

Over in Gastown on the edge of Chinatown, the owners of the former Zero Zero Pizzeria have relaunched their pizzeria as Stretch Roman Pizza (415 Abbott Street), which opened up on May 8.

The 700-square-foot spot (which seats about 16 people) serves Roman-style, rectangular al-taglio pizza. Their 48-hour dough-making process uses Italian flour, and pizzas are sold in 4- by 7-inch slices, or as 12-, 24-, or 36-inch pies.

Options include smoked salmon with dill cream and fried capers, roasted chicken with pineapple, salami and potatoes, brie and prosciutto with fig and onion jam, smoked sliced bacon with butternut squash, five vegetarian selections, and more.

There are also salads, paninis, and desserts. There's even a 12-inch dessert pizza, which includes poached pears, strawberries, blackberries, fior di latte mozzarella, fresh mint, and a drizzle of maple syrup. Yum.

Also over in Chinatown, as we previously mentioned, Straight Outta Brooklyn opened up its third location at 648 Main Street.

      Assembli assembles

Move over, Avengers. It's time for pizza lovers to assemble.

Vancouver's Deanna Embury has launched the build-your-own pizza and salad outfit Assembli Pizza at 2325 Cambie Street (at 8th Avenue, in the former Hubbub space).

      Assembli

Ingredients include non–GMO, hormone-free, antibiotic-free, local, and organic items, and selections can be made gluten- or dairy-free upon request .

For those who don't want to bother with the custom process, there are pizza selections such as roasted cauliflower, spinach, and cilantro with curry tomato sauce and yogurt drizzle; seasoned ground beef pepperoni, and bacon; herb-roasted chicken with a yogurt and adobo sauce drizzles; or a roast rosemary root vegetable mix in a spicy tomato sauce.

If you want to go the healthy route but don't want to build your own salad, you can choose from offerings like the O-Mega Braniac (greens, quinoa, beets, blueberries, seeds, avocado salsa, and more), the Sexy Hippie (brown rice, quinoa, roasted root vegetables, beets, apple, walnuts, and more), or the Wild Cowboy (brown rice, black beans, greens, roasted corn salsa, and more).

To add to the healthy options, there are also superfood smoothies (with ingredients like goji berries, acai, chia seeds, and more) as well as gelato and sorbetto.

      More Trattoria

Trattoria Pizzeria relaunched on the rooftop patio at Park Royal South (757 Main Street, West Vancouver) earlier this month. The décor has been changed—white tablecloths have been taken away and foliage has been increased to heighten the Italian garden feel.

The pizza menu has been revamped and selections now include the Aglio Olio (broccolini, pepperoncino, asiago, and parmesan cream) and Carbonara (smoked pancetta, parmesan cream, free-range egg, and scallions) along with the likes of the Balboa (capicola with charred pineapple and mozzarella), Megane (smoked pancetta, leeks, shaved brussel sprouts, provolone, and parmesan cream), and Agnello (lamb merguez, goat cheese, free-range egg) just to name a few.

There are also salads (such as seared rare Ahi tuna or crispy chicken parmesan) and antipasti (such as beef carpaccio, signature meatballs, or Sicilian calamari).

The pizzeria, run by the Glowbal Group, also has locations in Kitsilano (1850 West 4th Avenue) and Burnaby (102–4501 Kingsway).

A little more Italy on the Drive

Sopra Sotto Italian Pizzeria will open at 1510 Commercial Drive (not far from East 1st Avenue), featuring pizzas made in a wood-fired oven. The pizzeria will take over the location from the former Caffé Roma and Lounge. We're awaiting more details to come on this one.

      Ignition imminent

Ignite Pizzeria is gearing up to open at Main and 10th Avenue. The shop will seat 50 people inside, with an additional 10 on the patio. Further details yet to come on this one.
