Creative sandwiches at Bel Café please vegetarians and omnivores alike

It’s nice to see a sandwich menu that pays the vegetarian option some respect. David Hawksworth’s new Bel Café (801 West Georgia Street) cooks slices of butternut squash sous vide and layers them between multigrain bread with Brie, Asian pear, arugula, and apple marmalade. For carnivores, the spiced pulled-chicken sandwich is also delicious, oozing buttery caramelized onions, provolone, and harissa aioli on ciabatta. (Each sandwich is $10.60; ask for them toasted.) Other winning dishes on the menu include the spicy green-papaya salad with grilled chicken ($14) and the roasted-tomato soup ($6.80 for a small). There’s table service in the small seating area or take-away from the counter.
