Six food and dining events
Harvest Fair with Japanese flair
On Saturday (October 2), the National Nikkei Museum and Heritage Centre (6688 Southoaks Crescent, Burnaby) is holding its annual Japanese Farmers Market. Find fresh veggies like daikon radish and burdock root on sale from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and buy jars of umeboshi and other Japanese pickles, along with baked goods and lunch items from 11 a.m. until they’re gone.
Roots for Food
Local food, sustainability, and art rule October 8 to 16 at the SUSTENANCE: Feasting on Art & Culture Festival at the Roundhouse Community Centre (181 Roundhouse Mews). From opening night’s aboriginal-food-and-wine focus to October 14’s Dinner and Dialogue: 5 Courses of Conversation featuring five creative chefs ($70), SUSTENANCE delivers. Part of FarmFolkCityFolk’s Get Local project, the festival also has interactive art, a FarmKidsCityKids meet-up, World Food Day workshops, and more.
Posh Pub Grub
Since the St. Regis Hotel brought the next-door St. Regis Bar and Grill (608 Dunsmuir Street) into the fold a few months ago, food quality has climbed more than a few notches. The menu is peppered with tasty items like barbecued pulled-pork sliders, mini Yorkshire puddings stuffed with roast beef, a falafel burger, a hearty Irish stew, steak frites, and more ($8 to $26).
Taste Around Yaletown
Menus go up online today (September 30) for Taste of Yaletown, a dining promotion that runs from October 13 to 31. The annual event offers three-course meals at set prices of $25, $35, and $45. Twenty-six restaurants are participating, including Charm Modern Thai, Rodney’s Oyster House, Hapa Izakaya, and the Opus Hotel’s pop-up restaurant, One Hundred Days.
UVA Does Lunch
Executive chef Neil Taylor has ramped up the previously limited weekday lunch menu at UVA Wine Bar (900 Seymour Street). Mains now include ever-changing fresh pastas and seafood dishes ($12 to $15) and a three-course set lunch for $26. UVA is also open for breakfast daily, with frittatas, Italian-style crepes, panettone French toast, and more ($8 to $14).
Turkey Time
Got plans for Thanksgiving? If not, give the Wedgewood Hotel’s (845 Hornby Street) sweet deal—available October 9, 10, and 11—a whirl. Starting at $255 for two people, you get a luxurious room, a three-course turkey dinner, a breakfast buffet, and valet parking. (Dinner only is $55 per person.)
