Want to warm up fast? Try the nabeyaki udon at Takarabune Japanese Restaurant (6459 Victoria Drive, 604-321-0036). This noodle soup is served in a scorching-hot cast-iron pot, so it radiates comfort. Co-owner Seiyo Kumo, who hails from Kyoto, makes the dashi broth from scratch with bonito flakes and adds chunks of chicken, shiitake mushrooms, fish cake, green onion, and two tempura prawns to each bowl. A softly poached egg swirls in the middle. At just $7.95, it’s a deliciously simple lunch or dinner. Don’t be put off by the strip-mall location: Takarabune has gained a loyal following with its friendly service and well-priced menu.
