Head of the class - Manvils

We asked the Manvils's Mikey Manville about the city's hippest haunts and hottest hotties:

There's a reason why Mikey Manville—singer, guitarist, and booking agent for the Manvils—keeps scoring his band some pretty sweet opening slots (the Bellrays and the Stereophonics to name a couple): his group's debut album, Buried Love, rocks in every sense of the word.

Best local release other than yours
“The Philharmonic's Cordova Gore. It can only be described as a psychedelic, noisy rock 'n' roll revival and the nice thing about it is all the music is written and recorded by this guy Adam and his girlfriend. I can feel the love that was put into it.”

Most mind-blowing gig of the past year
“My Morning Jacket at the Commodore [November 3]. Usually I'm a big fan of the full production with people going loopy on-stage, but they weren't going completely crazy. So I thought it was pretty amazing that they could blow me away just with their talent.”

What Vancouver band is overdue for a reunion gig?
“The Modernettes. It would just be a nice blast from the past to see what started the whole '80s rock 'n' roll movement in Vancouver. I'd seriously walk to the end of the block and back to see them.”

Who would you love to see on your MySpace Friend list?
“I would have to say Michael Jackson. I used to wear a sparkly glove and do the moonwalk for my folks, and the first concert I ever went to was the Jacksons in 1984, so as creepy as it sounds, Michael was my first influence.”

John Q. Musicbiz just flew in from L.A. and he's waving his gold card around. Where are you gonna take him?
“The PumpJack Pub on Sundays. That's when the hurly-burly men all get their sequined buttless chaps on. So it would be a real big test for Q. to see if he could handle not only the Manvils, but a house full of manvils.”

What local musician makes you wish you were a little more promiscuous?
“I saw Carolyn Mark play this year and she was pretty awesome. She's got so much charisma it's hard to compare her to any other female artist that's around right now. She's gorgeous and she's got an incredible personality—?she's really a full-packaged musician.”

Which Vancouver venue would you be saddest to see go?
“Richard's on Richards. Musicians seem to have their best shows there and that's why it's one of the best venues. I mean, you have to work really hard not to connect with your audience because of the balcony, so it takes the pressure off.”
