Best of Vancouver

Head of the class - The Poison Dart

We asked The Poison Dart's Megan McDonald about the city's hippest haunts and hottest hotties:

The Poison Dart debuted this year with Get Hot on Portland-based Marriage Records. Singer-guitarist Megan McDonald opens the disc with the epic declaration “I Was Not Made to Reproduce”. Employing xylophone, cello, banjo, and saw, the cheeky songs that follow make Get Hot the best thing to come out of Langley this year.

Best local release other than yours
“Hey, Sugar by Bossanova. It's been a long time coming, and I'm very excited Chris Storrow finally got his album out. It's got a good disco vibe all the way through it and really good lyrics and good cabaret singing. And his personality comes through quite a bit, which is a good thing. He's very dry.”

Most mind-blowing gig of the PAST year
“I really, really liked seeing Good Time John with Thanksgiving at the Mount Pleasant [Community Centre] lounge [September 2]. Good Time John's from Ireland; he was visiting for a few months and just went back. He had a pickup band of Adrian [Orange] from Thanksgiving and Alex [Mahan, of the Poison Dart]. It was just thrown together, but you wouldn't know it.”

What Vancouver band is overdue for a reunion gig?
“Orcasaurus. I never got to see them, but they were legendary about 10 years ago. I think there was a Georgia Straight photographer in there somewhere, six guitarists, three drummers, two bassists, and a screamer. It was a bunch of people from old bands. Apparently it was the worst hair band ever, but amazing.”

Who would you love to see on your Myspace Friend list?
“Stephen Malkmus. I'm a huge Pavement fan, and there's always that 10-year-ago dream, ‘I'm going to marry Stephen Malkmus!' And then you don't. You get a different life. He would still be nice to have as a Myspace friend. In case our relationships don't work out.”

John Q. Musicbiz just flew in from L.A. and he's waving his gold card around. Where are you gonna take him?
“Bin 941 [941 Davie Street] for grilled Portobello mushroom, pommes frites, and crab cakes. Or Bishop's [2183 West 4th Avenue]. Ethical food, locally grown, and they support the organic farms near my house.”

What local musician makes you wish you were a little more promiscuous? “Matt [Skillings] and Thomas [Shields] from Run Chico Run are pretty obvious. Everybody, man or woman, would do them. Probably everybody has. Together they probably weigh about 240 pounds, so maybe they're just unthreatening to people. They're awesome musicians, and good people, and they can hold a drink.”

Which Vancouver venue would you be saddest to see go?
“The Sugar Refinery. Oh wait... Well, part of me died when SR did, and like any memorable former relationship, it makes one reluctant to fall so hard the next time. If I must, perhaps Blim? If they were allowed to have live drums.”
